Futuro gentile
Grand Hornu, Belgium
2023
Exhibition
The exhibition is called Gentle Future. It occupies two wings of the first court, the Hay Warehouse wing and the Stables wing. The two large rooms have miraculously retained the character of the original buildings. In one room the prototypes and products of Private Production are displayed, in the other the models of the Earth Stations and the architectures that were built from them.
On one side are products designed over a period of more than thirty years, from the end of the Memphis to the present. The extraordinary period of Memphis had introduced me to the subject of design, craftsmanship, small series production, and I had realised how indispensable this was for me and how much I gained from the slow and instinctive work of my hands. With Produzione Privata I made many objects, every year, using different materials, techniques and processes. I discovered worlds that were surviving under the overwhelming pressure of technological innovation and the rush to fast and immediate consumption. I discovered in the world of the past how much it should not be abandoned and deserves to remain in order to allow us to aspire to a 'gentle future'.
