Maioliche Deruta (2012)

Michele De Lucchi,

A collection of majolica vases for the ancient craft enterprise ‘Ubaldo Grazia di Deruta’. Starting from the Renaissance tradition of hand-turned pottery, still miraculously perpetuated in the Umbrian village of Deruta, the design brings modernity to the shapes. Bases and decorations, hand-painted by Carol Brannigan to a design by Michele De Lucchi, are made with colours outside the traditional majolica palette, but are created in four-colour process by computer and then obtained in the research laboratories of Ubaldo Grazia Maioliche. The raw material is clay extracted from Umbrian rivers from which the names of the vases derive. Designed with a spirit of innovation, the majolica collection demonstrates that design no longer only dialogues with industry, but is able to creatively recover Italian craftsmanship and savoir faire. Michele De Lucchi's commitment to experimentation aimed at the productive growth of the sector prompted the Deruta municipality to sponsor the project.
